Summer Games Announcement

2020 Summer Games Sports Updates

The Michigan Senior Olympics would like to thank everyone for their patience upon waiting to hear what decisions are going to be made about the 2020 Summer Games.  Every day we are listening to the Governor’s speeches, looking at the ever changing guidelines, and watching what other State Games are doing to keep everyone safe during these uncertain times.  We are constantly trying to connect with the facilities, officials, health experts, and even talking with you, the athletes to find out if the summer games will be able to go on.  Thank you to everyone who filled out the athlete survey. There was a large number of you would still like to have the games this summer and we love that enthusiasm in each of you!  There is also a group of you that is concerned with all that is surrounded with the Covid-19 pandemic and simply not being able to train for the upcoming games.  Thank you for all of your comments, every concern and response was thoroughly read.

The Michigan Senior Olympics staff has put in a lot of hours to try to put on as many sporting events this summer as possible while keeping in mind the athletes, volunteers, and sponsors. It has come to the time in which decisions must be made on the status of the games. The games will look much different this year as the schedule has become very limited.

After looking at each sport individually the MSO Board of Directors has decided that while some of the games can be held but postponed to September, some sports unfortunately need to be cancelled in full.  The reason why certain sporting events (outlined below) will be cancelled this summer is because of many components including:  the facility is not going to allow our sporting competitions to be held at their location because they are either not open or simply cannot hold the events due to close contact; the event requires a lot of volunteers to put on that we honestly do not have this year; the event needs officials to run the event that have told us that they are not able to run the events while following all of the restrictions.

Please keep in mind when looking at your specific sporting event that the National Senior Games has made the decision that if the event cannot be held then they are looking back at the 2016 and 2018 qualifier games, and if you qualified then, you will be qualified for the 2021 National Senior Games in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For more details on the Adjusted Qualifications please see the next section of the newsletter or feel free to email to verify if you are qualified for your events.

Below you will find the list of events we can offer, pending events, canceled events, and virtual events.

Please feel free to contact the Michigan Senior Olympics with your comments and concerns!
