HISTORY OF THE MSO

History of Michigan Senior Olympics Michigan Senior Olympics (MSO) is a non profit 501c(3) organization that was founded in 1979 and a leading advocate in the senior health and fitness area for the past fourty-five years!

MSO is a member of the National Senior Games Association, adopting its format and guidelines, and is the only qualifying site in Michigan for athletes to proceed to the National games and represent the State of Michigan. Michigan is also an open state which means that athletes can compete in the Michigan games and qualify to represent their state in the NSGA games. MSO is endorsed by the Governors Council on Physical Fitness.

The Michigan Senior Olympics focus is on enhancing the quality of life for the over 50 age group by providing and developing programs in physical fitness, nutrition and enhancing mental strength and sports skills.

Michigan Senior Olympics has come a long way from a handful of people participating in the 1979 games at the Pontiac Silverdome to the 1,500 participants in the 2023 games. The games will be hosted in Oakland County through 2024 with Oakland University as home of MSO and many of the events will be held on campus.

MSO operates and continues to grow through the generosity of sponsors, local businesses, donations and membership fees. These funds not only support the games but also the clinics and quality programs which benefit and educate athletes at all levels of their sport.

Michigan Senior Olympics offers the 50 plus population competitive sports and a network of people with the same ideals and lifestyle. MSO is dispelling the myth of aging, as well as serving as the impetus for this age group to maintain a healthy body, mind and spirit. The result is a healthier more productive life for all while lowering the health care costs in the State of Michigan.
